Discover the spectacular landscape of the Fish River Canyon on a guided hike, spending the nights out in nature.
The guided route through harsh terrain descends steeply into the canyon via ‘jelly legs gorge’ and up again to the rim. There are no demarcated tracks adding a sense of true adventure to the experience. Whilst this hike requires significant levels of fitness – there is no need to carry heavy backpacks; a canvas bag with your personal belongings will be delivered each day to either Camp Eternity or Camp Edge where you will overnight.
You will pass intriguing desert-adapted quiver trees standing solitary against a fascinating 500 million year old geological fault. Or you might want to stop and watch a herd of the rare Hartman’s zebra as they disappear into a side canyon. On hot days you can cool off in permanent rock pools and swim between the rock faces while a Pied Kingfisher watches from a ledge above.
Camp Eternity and Camp Edge are as evocative as their names suggest. Carefully designed stone gabion shelters merge with the landscape. Meals are served under a trillion stars and when you retire to the comfort of your tent, nature’s elements – either harsh or heavenly – are close by and keep you company through the night.
Day 1: Arrival Fish River Lodge
On arrival guests will be checked into their chalet at Fish River Lodge.
A canvas bag will be provided for guests to pack their hiking gear and toiletries in a canvas bag. This bag will be delivered to the respective camps whilst guests hike for the day. All other belongings should be packed away in the guest’s vehicle. Guests will meet their guide at dinner time where he will brief them on the hiking routes.
Day 2: Overnight Camp Eternity
After breakfast, departure in a vehicle with a personal guide to the start of the hike. The hike commences with a steep descent down ‘jelly legs’ gorge into the canyon ending at the rock pools where a packed lunch will be provided. A steep ascent back up the canyon for an overnight at Camp Eternity.
After a refreshing welcome drink, guests can retire to their tents where thy will find their canvas bag. After a sundowner, guides will brief them on the next day’s hiking.
A 3-course dinner will be served under the stars before guests return to their tents.
Distance: Approximately 16 km
Day 3: Overnight Camp Edge
The hike commences after breakfast. A descent back into the canyon follows a loop behind ancient sediments. After a stop for lunch, hikers will pass ‘mushroom rocks’ back up to Camp Edge. Again, a welcome drink will be served before guests are shown to their tents where their canvas bags will have been delivered.
After a sundowner, guides will brief guests on the next day’s hiking. A 3-course dinner will be served under the stars before guests retire to their tents.
Distance: Approximately 14km
Day 4: Hike back to the Lodge
After breakfast, guests will commence their final hike down into Granite Gorge and back up to the Lodge where they will arrive between 11h00 and 12h00.
Guests are welcome to use the facilities before their departure should they not be overnighting at the Lodge.

Cancellation policy
A non-refundable deposit of 25% of the full value of the booking is payable upon confirmation of any reservation. The balance of the full amount is due no later than 8 weeks prior to arrival. Where reservations are made within 31 days of date of arrival, payment is due within 72 hours.
All bookings are on request only and you will receive a separate booking confirmation from Natural Destinations together with payment infos. Any booking is only 100% confirmed once payment has been received.
