A study abroad experience is different for everybody and the list of reasons why you should go can be nearly endless. We have put together some of the most importatn reasons why you should join a study abroad program.
See the World
The biggest reason you should consider a study abroad program is the opportunity to see the world. The benefits of studying abroad include the opportunity to see natural wonders, museums and landmarks of your host nation. In addition, when you’re abroad, you won’t be limited to traveling in just the nation in which you are studying – you can visit neighbouring countries as well!
It enhances employment opportunities
Through an employer's eyes, a student who has studied abroad is self-motivated, independent, willing to embrace challenges, and able to cope with diverse problems and situations. Your experience living and studying in a foreign country, negotiating another culture, and acquiring another language will all set you apart from the majority of other job applicants. Being fluent in a foreign language will open innumerable doors and possibilities to you, both in your career and personal life. International experience provided by studying abroad is likely to be looked on favourably by employers.
The experience abroad often challenges students to reconsider their own beliefs and values and perspectives about themselves and their own culture. The experience may perhaps strengthen those values or it may cause students to alter or abandon them and embrace new concepts and perceptions. You become less materialistic, surviving on an airline luggage allowance (usually 23kg / 50lbs) of stuff helps you realise what’s important to you, and having a relatively small number of belongings means it's easier to pack everything up and go travelling.
Help you develop skills and give you experiences a classroom setting will never provide
Being immersed in an entirely new cultural setting is scary at first, but it's also exciting. It's an opportunity to discover new strengths and abilities, conquer new challenges, and solve new problems. Studying abroad is the most effective and accessible means for students to develop needed skills as it pushes a student to get out of their comfort zone to experience another culture, language, environment and education system. It teaches students to appreciate diversity first-hand, and enables them to recognize and then dismiss stereotypes they may have held about people they had never met.
Find New Interests
If you are still questioning why to study abroad, you should know that studying in a different country offers many new activities and interests that you may never have discovered if you’d stayed at home. You might find that you have an as-yet undiscovered talent for hiking, water sports, golf, or other new sports you may never have tried back home.
Create Lasting Memories
Most students who’ve studied abroad claim their time overseas was the best year of college. You’ll meet new friends who will want to share their culture, ideas, and learn about yours. Create lasting memories and develop life-long friendships.
